Every year in spring I’m getting all excited and start making plans about where to go surfing in the summer. It usually then when I realize that the winter months didn’t exactly benefit my fitness. Sometimes I feel like I want to lose a couple of pounds here and there and then I remember my abs also having looked better and more firm not too long ago.
In other words, spring is always a time where I want to do something for my fitness to get ready for the upcoming surfing season.
To be honest, I got a little tired of the usual routine that is visiting your average fitness gym, sweating and exercising. This is why I started to look for more exciting fitness classes where there is a trainer that can teach you about the best routines.
I am also not exactly the type who enjoys high-energy training. I find that low to medium moderate exercises such as Pilates or Yoga or overall a lot better for getting in shape and losing the one or the other pound. Plus, and that’s one reason I enjoy Pilates classes so much is that there are a lot more fun than simply going to the gym.
It wasn’t very easy to find a good gym here in Hackney where they also offer Yoga and Pilates courses. It took me a couple of months to find a suitable gym in my area. I’m now with London Fields Fitness here in Hackney and am very happy that I found them. Their staff is very friendly and most importantly they are knowledgeable and helpful. So if you are like me and want to do something for your fitness this spring, let’s meet up at Pilates in Hackney here in East London! For me this is the best and most fun way to get ready for surfing season!
If you love surfing like I do but don’t necessarily have infinite cash to spend on costly hotels and other travel expenses, you will probably want to know how I go about this.
To be honest, I rather travel far off all those tourists traps like most people go to when they go on a holiday.
I am certainly not the guy who is going to book into a hotel near a beach!
As a surfer, there’s another issue you need to consider: you want to haul your boards and maybe equipment like cameras and this means you will need a sizeable car or van. If you were to rent a van at your destination each and every time, it would quickly add up too!
You can believe me when I tell you that camping is the best way to go to all those amazing places. And when I am talking about camping I am talking about how cool it is if you get your very own campervan!
Modern camper vans have plenty of space for several boards and whatever else you want take with you. And of course they have an area where you can sleep, cook or simply just to relax. So basically, it’s like your own private holiday apartment on wheels. Not only is this the best way to get around in my pinion, it’s also saving me a lot of money! (Minus the expenses for gas, of course).
In my experience, a lot of people never went camping. Maybe they think it’s awful or they don’t know how great a modern camper van can be. To those I always say that they should rent a campervan first because of the best way to to know whether you will like it or not! Almost any town in UK has a place where you can rent a van. If you look around, I am sure you will find a trusted van rental place your area!
If you love travel and want to do something really special and also like to learn about our history, how about historical day trips to one of the U.K.’s many exciting historical locations?
The Guardian has a nice, helpful guide which I can highly recommend to you. It has some of the coolest and most exciting historical locations including Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire, the Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire and many more great places where you can go.
The above picture is the Castel Henllys in Pembrokeshire. It is one of my favourite locations to teach the children about the U.K.’s exciting historical past.
What they did there is that they recreated a hill fort from the iron age in the midst of Pembrokeshire Coast national park.
The site has been built on top of the excavated remains of the original site which is from around 600 BC. There is lots of cool activities in the summer months too! They can learn things such as weaving or making bread just like our ancestors did 2000 years ago.
If you were to learn more about Castel Henllys in Pembrokeshire, see their website at pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk for more information.

Not anyone can afford a surfing holiday in Hawaii! The good thing is that you won’t have to go that far for some of the best surfing spots right here in Europe!
Some of the today’s best surfing beaches can be found in Spain, France and Portugal. There are even fantastic spots to surf in the UK, Denmark & Norway!
My personal favourite source to find the best surfing locations where you won’t have to travel far to get to is http://www.surfing-waves.com/atlas/europe.html
This website features a convenient and easy map can see all the great surfing spots in one place. When you zoom in a particular location, such as for example Galúa in the south-east of Spain you can get a whole bunch of helpful information such as the wave quality, wave direction, what type beach it is (sand or rock etc.) and most importantly their location’s difficulty rating. Obviously you don’t want to go surfing on a difficult beach if you are just starting out with wind surfing!
So if you’re looking for the best waves I highly recommended you check out this website!
